Brenda Wheat, spoke with the group to share the current status of the plans, issues/concerns, and fund-raising events and opportunities.
►Brenda, President of the Board, started the NDCP 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2019 after learning of potential adverse options for the properties use that were not conducive to building a healthy community. NDCP is governed by a volunteer Park Board and includes a president, secretary and treasurer.
►The property has been leased to the NDCP by the Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation for a 20-year term with no rent required. All improvements to the property are at the expense of the NDCP. These improvements will be funded through grants, corporate sponsors and donations.

Currently:

  • Demolition on the school is complete
  • Two Phase Project- Using local builders to promote community and business
    • Phase I: includes the addition of a one-mile walking/running/biking path around the perimeter of the property
      • Proposal has been made on the walking path to sell 100 feet of path to businesses; sponsored business would have a plaque commemorating their donation
      • Eagle Scouts want to do volunteer on a flag pole as one of their badge projects
    • Phase II: includes playground equipment, a sensory area and a potential basketball court and shelter
  • Suggestion was made to pair up with blacktop company working in Bright to get reduced costs on the walking path
  • Path will ensure special needs access and playground will incorporate special needs equipment/area
  • Unable to obtain grants without owing the property, ideas were shared on ways of getting the school board involved or possibly other entities.
  • Contacting AARP and tennis shoe companies for sponsorship

Patty Riebsomer hosted the member spotlight meeting at the Bright location. George’s is a family-owned and operated independent pharmacy.
Patty shared that the Brookville location was founded in 1985 and is a family owned and operated business. The Brookville building dates back to the days of horse-and-buggy.

“480 Main St. …served as a drugstore for most of its existence. In 1907-08, the Carter Drugstore was enlarged and remodeled into the basic structure visible today. In the early 1900s, the drugstore employed Maggie Wright, considered to be the first licensed female pharmacist in Indiana.” [franklincountyin.com]
